A night we will never forget

May 26 2005

By Mark Murtagh, Liverpool Echo

IT WAS an unforgettable night - and the only thing to match being in Istanbul as Liverpool FC swept to victory was celebrating in the Reds' home city.

Fans celebrate Liverpool's win in Liverpool city centre

In city centre Liverpool revellers par-tied late into the night, strangers embraced, fans congratulated one another in the street and the night was filled with the sound of car horns as drivers showed their delight.

Heartfelt renditions of You'll Never Walk Alone mingled and echoed around the city centre.

The emotions of the win were in stark contrast to the tense, expectant atmosphere as the game kicked off.

Many city centre pubs showing the match were so packed fans spilled out into the street.

Those who managed to elbow their way into Wetherspoons in Clayton Square stood on stools, chairs and tables to get a view of what was happening on the pitch in Istanbul.

It was a wall of sound for more than two hours.

If fans weren't swearing or cheering they were singing their hearts out.

All the favourites were covered from Fields of Anfield Road to You'll Never Walk Alone and a fruity version of Que Sera Sera replacing the title with Steven Gerrard.

Reds fans came draped in flags, dressed head to toe in red and with a fire in their bellies.

They dreamt up innovative ways to show their footballing colours from red and white hair ribbons, dyed red hair to tassles on their cowboy boots.

At half time the crowd was split between those with hope in their heart and those who thought the die was cast.

With a heavy heart they returned to watch the second half unfold - but no one could have predicted what would follow.
