TRIUMPHANT Emlyn Hughes, that man with the widest smile in soccer said: "The cup felt as though it had never left my hands. It is a tremendous feeling. Everyone is very elated but we are very tired.
"It has been a long, hard season but to win the European Cup in front of so many of our fans is fantastic. It couldn't have been written better if it was a fairy story.
"Now we are aiming to retain it again next year.
"It was a very tight match. Bruges are a good side. They defended very well and played some good football. Our fans expected us to go out and take Bruges apart, but we couldn't do it because they gave us a harder game than Moenchengladbach last year.
"We were at a bit of a disadvantage because everyone was expecting us to do well. In the first 20 minutes we didn't really get a grip, but 10 minutes from half time we began to feel that we were going to win."
Goalscoring Kenny Dalglish described his match-winning effort in typically modest style.
"Graeme Souness played the ball through from the edge of the box; it came to me and I just clipped it over the keeper and into the goal," he said..
"Everybody has been saying how bad Bruges were but performances don't matter. We have won the European Cup and that's the important thing."
Ray Kennedy was jubilant, saying: "We never felt under any pressure. The only way we were going to lose was if we made mistakes ourselves. We managed to get the one goal and that made life much easier for us."
Bruges boss Ernst Happel said: "Our team was weakened by a lot of injuries. Krieger had a painkilling injection just before the kick off and Maes had one at half time. For these reasons we had to play defensively when we usually like to play offensively."
Happel added: "Liverpool's team today was but a shadow of their team two years ago. I was disappointed with them."
