Flights chaos strands fans

By Neil Hodgson, Liverpool Echo

THOUSANDS of jubilant Reds fans were left stranded by flight chaos in Turkey today.

Victorious homecoming Kopites were trapped in tiny Sabiha Gokcen airport on the outskirts of Istanbul as departures slowed to a trickle.

John Lennon airport corporate affairs manager Robin Tudor said up to 15 flights should have flown into Liverpool by 8am, but only three had arrived.

He said despite scant information from Turkey, he believed matters had been further complicated by fans being ushered on to the wrong planes.

He warned many fans faced significantly longer journeys home than they expected.

"We are seeing dribs and drabs of flights. We're not getting any information from out there. We have heard that people are not on their own flights."

Stranded James Debereux, 48, from Aigburth, said: "We are led to believe the crew ran out of flying time and just went. As far as we know, our plane returned empty.

"There are 189 passengers still here because they took the plane home and we are being told it may be as late as 8pm before they get a return flight. We have had no food, no water and no information."

Despite the chaos, the first arrivals back in Liverpool were in jubilant mood.

Ian Griffith, 32, a product manager from Birken-head, one of the first off the airport apron, said: "It was absolutely amazing - that's the way to win a European Cup.

"We've been accused of being boring all season. I don't think you can say that any more."

Gareth Birch, 25, of St Helens, said: "That was the greatest moment of my life. I have never known emotion like it.

"The team was unbelievable to turn it around like that. We thought we'd lost."
