Robert, from Walton, stayed in his hotel room until his flight home the following Saturday, being visited by friends who came with tales of the scenes on the pitch and in the streets below his window.
Back in Liverpool three days later, Robert went straight to Fazakerley Hospital where he had his stitches removed and staples put in their place. "But because of the stitches I ended up with a blood clot in my leg and I was on crutches for six weeks."
Even that didn't stop Robert, though. He went to Liverpool's pre-season friendly at Wrexham on his crutchesand missed only two games last season.
Robert, who picked up a special fans award at the ECHO sports personality of the year awards, says: "I think my wife Susan worries because when I go to the match, she wonders if I'll come back from the match in one piece.
"But Paul and I have learned a lesson from Istanbul and if we get to the final again we'll go in a group - so someone can look after me!"
