GOT ON the coach to the ground, sung all the way. We could not believe we where 3 nil down at half-time. Some Irish lad said to us at half time, do you believe in miracles? The miracle happened. We had just seen the greatest ever comeback in the history of the mighty Reds to win the Cup. Got on the coach back to the airport singing all the way. We were still there at 6.30 Thursday night. We missed the homecoming. We finally got back to Liverpool at 10 o'clock that night. We will never forget the greatest ever comeback by the mighty Reds, Champions of Europe five times. Mike & Dave, L1 MY brother and a few mates changed our routine and headed into town with the masses. When Milan's third went in, our kid suggested going back to all the ale stacked up in his, instead of "paying town prices at a bar to see the Reds get stuffed" - his words. So four of us jumped a hackney and headed home. this was the first CL game we watched in town thatseason, clearly a jinx! The minute the cab got out of town Stevie G scored, and before we got home we were on level terms - jinx broken! Yes we missed all 3 goals and only heard them on the driver's radio, but we didn't care. All that mattered was being back in the game. Back at our kid's we saw the shoot-out and all hell let loose, we just went berserk. I celebrated by doing a lap of the square at the front of the house, in only my trainers and aLiverpool flag! Our kid still maintains that we only won 'old big ears' again because we left town at half-time and broke the hex. What a night! T. Everett, Litherland WE found ourselves in a square full of Liverpool fans not knowing which way to go. We jumped on abus. After half an hour with loads of fans standing and shouting, a wheel on the bus started to give way due to the weight of the fans.I could hear the suspension creaking and crunching. The fans were oblivious due to the noise they were making, "We're the greatest team in Europe and we're going to Istanbul". Then 'We all dream of a team of Carraghers'. By this time the wheel was well and truly flat. Police cars were flashing lights to the driver and he just shrugged his shoulders as to say 'What can I do? I have to get these fans to the stadium'. By this time the fans realised something was up because the bus started to lean over, nearly toppling over. However he carried on and went 20mph all the way to the stadium which happened to be in the middle of nowhere literally but what a stadium. The atmosphere was immense,a sea of red and white. The first half flew by and I'm standing there in disbelief. I'm at the biggest game of my life, but we are three nil down and not with achance. But I honestlythought it wasn't over, however gutted I felt. Ithought to myself,'let'stake in the atmosphere, this is the best game I have been to, a European Cup final. So let's make some noise.' So I joined in the rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone at half time. The fans needed to sing it, we needed inspiration. Step up Steven Gerrard; two minutes later Smicer pulled it back to 3-2. All of a sudden the dream was possible. We won a penalty and just to make us nervous Alonso missed but put in the rebound. The rest is history. Victory is forthe moment, whichIwill never forget. But the pride will stay forever, we are the Champions of Europe for a fifth time. Incredible. David Thwaite, Liverpool |
