It was the greatest cup final, the greatest comeback, the greatest football night of all time. One supposes any Liverpool supporter would say that. The thing is though many other fans other than Reds plus players from other clubs sincerely believe that Liverpool's victory over AC Milan in Istanbul was the greatest game they'd ever seen. Only this week in the wake of Barcelona's last-gasp victory in the European Cup over Arsenal, goal scoring striker Eto'o proclaimed that the win had been inspired by Liverpool's performance on May 25 last year. "After seeing the way they played against Milan we knew that anything was possible," he said. A personal abiding memory is of arriving back at Manchester Airport in the early morning of May 27 to be greeted by a waiting taxi driver who slapped me on the back and said: "Ay mate I'm a United fan - I hate Liverpool - but what your lot did was bloody brilliant. I'm still buzzing." If that's what he felt just imagine what it meant to have watched the game as a Red. Here are the memories of five such fans. Some of them were there, some of them weren't. But all of them will never forget a night that will forever be etched as a beacon of light in their lives. Sheila Ravenscroft, widow of the much-loved Merseyside DJ, broadcaster and fanatical Red John Peel, was still coming to terms with his death from a heart attack when the final took place. Nevertheless the whole family - who like her are all passionate Liverpool fans - gathered in the living room of their cottage in Suffolk to watch the game. "We collected every single Liverpool shirt and scarf from around the house and draped them around the room while we watched the game. We were all wearing John's collection of Liverpool shirts too. We had champagne at the ready but by half-time when we were 3-0 down I thought `sod it!' and opened the bottle anyway. "The photos that were taken at the time show us all drinking with faces as long as fiddles. "But when they started to come back into it in the second half the tension became unbearable so when the equaliser went in everyone went berserk. "There's no respect for furniture in our house and some of the lads were leaping from one settee to the other. When it got to penalties we were all shrieking and screaming "John! John! Where are you? You've got to do something!" "Funnily enough we were doing exactly the same thing during last week's FA Cup final and it seemed to work then as well! "The following day we went into the village and bought more champagne and every single red flower we could find. "Then we walked to his grave covered it with the flowers, had a drink and said thanks to John for helping us to win the European Cup." |
