Liverpool's 18-man final squad have endured mixed fortunes since that memorable night. JERZY DUDEK: The hero of Istanbul's future was already under threat from the impending arrival of Jose Reina. Dudek has subsequently made just six further appearances for Liverpool and has been left out of Poland's squad for the World Cup, and is expected to leave this summer. STEVE FINNAN: The Irishman had been forced off at half-time against AC Milan through injury, but has continued to remain an integral part of Liverpool's defence. The right-back played more than 50 games and picked up a first FA Cup winners' medal this season. SAMI HYYPIA: Was expected to take a back seat following Istanbul after being told by Rafael Benitez that Liverpool were trying to sign a new centre-back. However, Daniel Agger didn't arrive until January and Hyypia responded with some of the best form of his Anfield career. JAMIE CARRAGHER: Remained an outstanding presence into the new season, even scoring a goal against FBK Kaunas in a Champions League qualifier. Netted into his own goal in the recent FA Cup final, but was still left standing - just about - as a winner in Cardiff. DJIMI TRAORE: Suffered an injury in pre-season and, after fighting back to fitness, was responsible for a poor mistake in helping Chelsea to a 4-1 win in October and was only a fringe player for the remainder of the campaign. Another who could depart in the close season. LUIS GARCIA: The man for the big occasion lived up to his reputation after Istanbul with goals against Arsenal, Everton and the FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea. However, a silly sending-off ruled him out of the final and brought a premature end to a season of largely inconsistent form. XABI ALONSO: Lit up the Premiership during his first season, culminating in his goal in Istanbul. Remains an integral part of Liverpool's midfield - scoring a memorable brace in the FA Cup win at Luton Town - and will hope to make an impact in the World Cup with Spain. STEVEN GERRARD: "How can I leave after a night like this?" said Gerrard after lifting the European Cup. He tested that question to the limit before turning his back on a move to Chelsea and delivering his best-ever season, scoring 23 goals and saving the best until last in Cardiff. JOHN ARNE RIISE: The Norwegian had been ousted from his favoured left-back role by Traore before Istanbul but this season held off the Frenchman and Stephen Warnock to become Benitez's first-choice. Will face further competition with the impending arrival of Fabio Aurelio. |
