"Everyone had waited so long, they wanted to get a good look at the cup," he says.

"I was allocated amounted police officer before we set off and he told me to stick with him, howeverfast he went. If he wanted me to speed up, he'd bang on the window, but to be honest we were in first gear all the way round. By the time we got to Melwood the engine was red hot."

Brian's personal highlight was driving past Anfield, where all his family were waiting. "I knew they were all there but I couldn't see them. They were shouting at me but Icouldn't hear them becausethe noise was unbelievable.

"It was just like being on the Kop, it took your breath away."

With autographs collected when his journey was over, Brian -who lives in Southport - says he now has some special memorabilia to show his grandchildren.

"2005 was probably the best year of my life," he smiles. "I drove the bus, I gained a niece and a nephew and I got married to Helen. It was fantastic. On my wedding day, I was doing my speech and one of my uncles shouted out 'what's better, getting married or driving Liverpool?'

"On that day I said getting married, of course. Ask me another day and it might be a different answer!"
