The Jury: Liverpool FC fans have their say on the Reds shaky start to the new season

ROBERT GILLIES, Aigburth

IF there was an annual award for pessimism some Liverpool fans would be leading contenders.

Defeat against Villa was our first at home since December 2007 and was entirely self inflicted.

The first problem was not scoring twice in the first few minutes from clear opportunities and killing the game off.

The reason for the inconsistent start can be laid at the door of the more experienced players. Benayoun, Gerrard and Kuyt missed sitters, Mascherano is still regaining fitness and Carragher has struggled with his distribution.

Since the kick-off at White Hart Lane Torres has whinged like a petulant prima-donna.

There is plenty of good news, form is temporary and class is permanent. The above players will come back into form.

LISA SOUTHERN, Wirral

FOLLOWING the opening day defeat at Spurs the question of where our goals would come from this term would always be hanging over us.

The 4-0 win against Stoke put an end to the negativity with some cracking individual performances, including Glen Johnson’s outstanding home debut, showcasing his attacking qualities and width.

Unfortunately, a lot can happen in a week.

With a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, we’ve now lost as many league matches as we did throughout the whole of last season.

We looked disjointed, showed a lack of creativity in midfield with no Alonso and his defence splitting passes and there was a serious lack of width. Let’s hope Aquilani can ‘excite’ as Rafa has promised.

Once again we got caught out by zonal marking at set-pieces.

Our trip to The Reebok on Saturday will be a true test, so come on red men!
