Clough runs riot in another great fightback

ALEX FERGUSON was reduced to muttering 'Bloody Hell' to describe only the second-best comeback in European Cup final history.

After another astonishing Liverpool fightback, I imagine the air turned blue in Anfield's away dressing room. Games against our 'friends' from down the M62 are rarely anything but full-blooded, exciting affairs. But apart from some notable wins, few match the encounter in 1994.

Just four days into the new year and United were being hailed as champions-elect, while Liverpool were playing second - or more like eighth or ninth - fiddle in the dying days of Graeme Souness's turbulent reign.

Souness wouldn't last the month, but as a parting gift clawing back from 3-0 down against United wasn't a bad way to go. Although losing to Bristol City was.

In just 24 minutes Liverpool were pulverised. In the eighth minute United were ahead as Steve Bruce headed in an Eric Cantona corner.

Liverpool had little time to regroup when Jamie Redknapp's pass was short allowing Ryan Giggs to chip over Bruce Grobbelaar. Minutes later, Dennis Irwin's free-kick curled in to make it 3-0.

The dilemma was to grin and bear it or leave. But there wasn't much time to decide as Nigel Clough pulled one back almost immediately. Clough's Liverpool career was generally a disappointment, a player who seemed ideally suited to Liverpool but never quite delivered. But on that night he certainly did.

The ex-Forest striker was a man possessed. He rifled home a stunning strike from 30 yards, was booked for a challenge on Giggs and grabbed his second seven minutes before the break.

Clough swept in after Wright's pass broke off Roy Keane, before ramming the loose ball home.

The match was frantic on and off the pitch when with 12 minutes left Stig Inge Bjornebye delivered a cross which surprsingly beat the first man, for Neil Ruddock to power in a flying header. Did we celebrate? Just a bit.
