Red Watch: A whiff of hypocrisy in the air as football returns

ROMAN ABRAMOVICH urges UEFA to act against clubs attempting to buy success; and Gary Megson accuses Liverpool of playing for free-kicks.
Yep, football’s back, and the unpleasant smell of hypocrisy is never far behind. The breathtaking duplicity of the Russian oligarch could be dismissed with a derisory snort were it not for the willingness of Michel Platini to welcome any ally in his campaign to inhibit the dominance of the Champions League by English clubs.
Abramovich’s naked attempt to pull up the drawbridge having safely established himself inside the castle would surely have attracted greater media criticism were it not for the outbreak of diver-ticulitis which started at the Emirates last Wednesday evening and spread to pandemic proportions over the weekend.
Who’d have thought that the tumble taken by Eduardo under Boric’s challenge would have attracted so much attention? After all, we’ve seen this all before haven’t we?
The answer of course is that, once again, the UEFA president saw an opportunity for self-promotion, and decided to institute charges against the Croatian against all logic and precedent.
