Tommy Smith: Liverpool must banish the pain of defeat

Take no notice Jamie

I HOPE Jamie Carragher does not take a blind bit of notice of those who have started to doubt him.

I was never a quick player but managed to play on at the top level at Anfield until I was 35.

And Jamie Carragher can do exactly the same today.

With Glen Johnson and Emiliano Insua new to the Liverpool back four as regulars this season, it’s clear we have work to do on aspects of our defending.

Johnson is terrific going forward – for me he’d be a natural wide right man – but at times that can mean Carragher and Martin Skrtel get left a bit exposed.

You don’t suddenly become a weaker player as you get into your thirties.

Jamie not only has bags of heart but he’s got tons of top level experience and – as his manager calls it – ‘game intelligence’ by now.

That’s invaluable.

I hope he ignores those fair weather fools who’ve decided overnight he’s not the player he was. It’s just not true.

I’m not blind to mistakes players make but Liverpool’s back four as a unit need to get tighter and keep more clean sheets.

That’s a collective responsibility – not something you pin on one player. Jamie’s a class act and a long way from done.

* YOU’D think England had lost a world cup final judging by some of the reaction to the defeat in Ukraine. I don’t know why so much fuss was made. They’re through to the finals in South Africa, had won eight games on the spin before going down to ten men and losing. Talk about an over-reaction!
