I'VE got a message to Liverpool chairman David Moores: For God's sake David don't even think about quitting. Clearly, feelings at Monday night's AGM at Anfield were running very high, with shareholders voicing the frustrations which all the supporters share. Very rarely does Liverpool Football Club wash its dirty linen in public like that and the chairman was obviously stung by the criticism and strength of feeling from the floor. But David Moores is a first class chairman and he must stay on. Unlike so many other club chairmen, he does not interfere in the running of things and he never courts publicity. He is nonetheless a passionate fan who cares deeply about Liverpool and is desperate for success. The Moores family have also been associated with both Liverpool and Everton for as long as anyone can remember and it would be a tragedy if that association were to end. I'm glad the chairman has agreed to talk with Steve Morgan who obviously is anxious to get more involved at Anfield. I have met Morgan and he comes across to me as another quiet man who has been extremely successful in business with Redrow and who is also a huge Liverpool supporter. If somehow a board-room partnership could come of this, allowing Morgan to inject some of his money into the club in return for more influence, then that has to be a scenario worth pursuing. For all their apparent differences in the past, David Moores and Steve Morgan will know they have got far more in common to unite them than divide them. Morgan has spelled out the feelings of the fans right now. In return David Moores has publicly said it's time to bury the hatchet and that is what all the fans now want to see happen. The other interesting point from Monday night was to hear Gerard Houllier admitting to mistakes and saying that some of his signings have simply not delivered. He knows who they are. We all do. |
