Len Capeling's best quotes of the year

Dec 8 2005

Rafael Benitez, Moyes, Cruyff, Redknapp and Costner. Len Capeling recalls the quotes of the sporting year.

Daily Post

I am the king of the outlaws at Anfield. In my mind I have already left. Besides, so far as they are concerned, I do not exist. Ever since Rafael Benitez came here they have treated me like the lowest arsehole on earth. And I will never forgive him for that. I'll leave as a free agent. Liverpool won't make a single penny from me. After the way the manager has treated me I don't want to leave him any presents.
- A star of Liverpool's historic treble under Gerard Houllier but now cast out. An embittered Stephane Henchoz, who made a summer-time move to promoted Wigan Athletic, the Premiership's early-season surprise package

El partido con Atletico was mucho mejor para todos.
- David Beckham praising Real Madrid's game against Atletico Madrid in 90 per cent Spanish

Everton still await news of Geneva-based financier Chris Samuelson's proposed purchase of a 29.9% stake in the club.
- Most repeated statement of the year. In November, Samuelson - brought on board by Bill Kenwright - was finally posted lost, joining the ranks of Lord Lucan, Shergar and the Kings Dock

I'm a loud-mouthed, bigoted bore.
- Eccentric racing tipster and Big Brother refugee John McCririck in confessional mood

There are comments and rumours... but from there to possible truth, there is a long road.
- The meditative Jose Reina, who later trod that road to Liverpool as first-choice goalkeeper

I am not a bad boy. I don't like to lose matches and love to win. But does that make me a bad boy? I have a nice heart and just want to play football.
- Case for the defence from El Hadji Diouf. Liverpool disagreed and took a heavy financial loss, selling him to Bolton Wanderers. In November, he was sent off AFTER a match!

If you play against a first division team then you should be able to play young players alongside experienced players because they should have the quality and the level. The risk is not knowing what will happen.
- Rafael Benitez.. What did happen was one of Liverpool's most humiliating defeats against lowly Burnley in the FA Cup

I've had loads of Evertonians phoning me and they're more over the moon than I am.
- Former Goodison midfielder Tony Grant, who starred in Burnley's shock victory

There have been mistakes and I've made my share of them. I have got things wrong at times and I won't pretend otherwise. But I have a fantastic bunch of players and together we'll get things right.
- First crisis meeting between Rafael Benitez and his charges as poor league form compounds that cup crash
