Football Forum: Would you let Torres go for £100million?

Sep 30 2009

Liverpool Echo

WOULD you sell Fernando Torres for £100m?

Torres is a brilliant player but I only raise this because Rafa became the most recent manager to infuriatingly boast “X is not for sale at ANY price “.

Any price you say? Every player has his price (as Manchester City and Real Madrid have proved). I would hate to see him go but £100m would pay for (say) one-third of a new stadium to last for the next 100 years.

What do other Liverpool and Torres fans think?

JUST how good is Fernando Torres?

Rafa says he can improve, but if he is doing what he is now at 25, what’s he going to be like at his peak? He’s the best to wear the shirt since John Barnes and potentially the best of all.

El Nino is a gift from the gods.

DIDIER DROGBA and Fernando Torres are the top two strikers at the moment.

Drogba is more of a bulldozer (I fear for Jamie Carragher when we play Chelsea on Sunday) and Torres is more elegant and easy on the eye. But Torres is a great player and will only get better.

He must be worth treble the amount we paid for him.

FERNANDO TORRES is an outstanding player – but for some people to say he is better than Ian Rush at this stage is ridiculous.

Three to four more seasons at this level, and yes, potentially, the question can be debated. To say that now is insane.

LOST amongst the clearly merited praise for Fernando Torres on Saturday was Steven Gerrard’s goal.

He’s going to have to go a long way to better that stunning strike this season.

It reminded me a little bit of a late John Barnes winner against Aston Villa in 1990, also at the Kop End, curled in with precision right over the keeper’s head.

Stevie’s quietly getting back to his very best and I’m sure there’s more good things to come from him in a Liverpool shirt this season.

IT IS good to see that we’re using two systems – 4-4-2 in home matches against lesser opposition, with Steven Gerrard in central midfield, two wingers and split strikers; and 4-2-3-1 away from home.

Our defence picks itself presently, the only variation from which would be a fit Agger perhaps playing in home matches to bring the ball out of defence, and Degen, Aurelio and Dossena occasionally used to rest Johnson and Insua.

There’s no need for two holding central midfielders at home, so it’s good to see Lucas or Mascherano alongside Gerrard or maybe Aquilani at some point. Maybe Aquilani and Gerrard will play central midfield against some lesser sides at home.

With Kuyt up top with Torres at home, any two from Riera, Babel and Benayoun serves us well out wide.
