TRANMERE RESERVES were left counting the cost of some familiar failings as they were beaten in a totesport.com League Cup group game at the Walkers Stadium.
Rovers were in with a shout until the final few minutes of a competitive contest, when two goals by a strong Leicester City side gave them a comfortable winning margin.
Coach Shaun Garnett said: “Once again the lads played quite well overall but we are not learning the lesson that mistakes and poor decision-making cost you goals at professional level. The penny does not seem to be dropping with some of the lads. We are conceding too many goals in both youth and reserve team games.”
Tranmere, a goal down after nine minutes, did not concede the second until 70 minutes and then halved the deficit through a 79th-minute strike by Kithson Bain. But they conceded two more on 87 and 90 minutes.
MISTAKES proved costly as Tranmere suffered a second Puma Youth Alliance defeat in succession.
Rovers, a goal down after nine minutes of the contest at Raby Vale, levelled on 17 minutes through under-16 striker Cole Stockton. But a lapse in concentration enabled the visitors to regain the lead straight from the kick-off.
Coach Shaun Garnett said: “It was a mixed bag. I was encouraged by our second-half performance but once again we were punished for making individual errors. The boys have got to learn.”
Tranmere travel to Port Vale in the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday. The first round tie kicks off at 11am.
