Encouraging families while preserving traditional matchday atmosphere

Apr 4 2007

by Lorraine Rogers, Liverpool Daily Post

ONE of the challenges for many professional football clubs is how to create a matchday environment that appeals to the traditional football supporter and also to the new type of football supporters.

New supporters to the game are often children or families. Their expectations are less about having a pie and pint and enjoying some unforgiving football banter and more about having a safe, family-orientated, fun day out.

Some clubs try so hard to appeal to the new supporters – with face painters, clowns, pre-match and half-time entertainment – that there’s a risk of alienating the long-suffering and often cynical traditional supporters.

Next season we hope to balance the interests of both groups of supporters by designating family-friendly areas in each stand. They will be near to facilities and have specially trained stewards on hand and all supporters will be asked to respect the fact that children and new supporters could be in these areas.

We want to retain the traditional matchday atmosphere that appeals to so many supporters but embrace the fact that some new supporters, especially with young families, might want something less overwhelming and more family focused.

Full details of these new arrangements are available from www.tranmererovers.co.uk/ and from the Ticket Office on 0870 460 3332.
