THE win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday meant Tranmere fans left Prenton Park in high spirits, optimistic that the sudden rise to sixth in League One could be consolidated with a trip to the basement club Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night.
Unfortunately, it was back to the normal kind of away day for Tranmere, something we’ve seen all too often. A lack of cutting edge and attacking ideas meant that a goal after only three minutes was all it took for League Two-bound Cheltenham to beat Rovers.
Results elsewhere meant that our brief flirtation in the top six was over and it’s now imperative that Ronnie Moore’s side pick up all three points this weekend. A trip to Oldham – where our record isn’t the best – is hardly the perfect place to go with that in mind.
Looking at the statistics of Rovers’ form away from home since Moore took over in 2006, you can see all too clearly where the problems lie. We don’t score nearly enough goals. Both this season and last we have scored fewer goals away from home than any other side in the top half of the table, and what’s more, we have to keep a clean sheet to give ourselves half a chance.
Despite the away form, I cannot help but feel a win has to be imminent.
