CELEBRATIONS to mark the first meeting of John Lennon and Paul McCartney half a century ago are launched today with a Beatles-themed flower festival.

Woolton in Bloom and more than 30 community groups have organised the three-day festival at St Peter’s church in Woolton.

It comes ahead of a re-enactment of the St Peter’s church fete next month.

It will be 50 years on July 6 since Lennon’s band the Quarrymen performed at the fete, and where Lennon was introduced to a teenage McCartney by a friend.

Among the themed floral displays at the festival, which runs until Sunday, are Yesterday by the Royal British Legion; Ticket to Ride by Davies Travel and Norwegian Wood by the award-winning National Wildflower Centre.

Programmes are on sale at the door or from Wendy at the Bishop’s Lodge on 0151-421 0831.

The Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside officially opened the festival last night at a special event attended by Lord Mayor Paul Clark, Bishop James Jones and Archbishop Patrick Kelly.
