Services for John's death

Amanda Holgate with the John Lennon Statue in Mathew Street

A CEREMONY was held to mark the anniversary of John Lennon's death.

The Liverpool Beatles Appreciation Society organised a meeting at Lennon's statue in Mathew Street yesterday to lay flowers and say prayers, 23 years after he was gunned down in New York.

Representatives from the city's Catholic and Anglican cathedrals gave readings at the event.

Only a handful of people turned up for the event.

But John Chambers, who runs the Liverpool Beatles Appreciation Society, said: "These things are out of our control.

"If a lot of people turned up, it might have turned into a bit of a circus.

"But what's important is I know I was there to pay my respects."
