Ringo’s old home may be moved to new museum

Jan 9 2007

by Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

The house in Madryn Street, Liverpool, where Ringo Starr grew up

PLANS to rebuild the childhood home of ex-Beatle Ringo Starr in Liverpool’s new museum were revealed today.

But the ECHO understands the proposal is nowhere near a certainty – because the terrace in Toxteth’s Welsh Streets is still privately owned.

The idea of taking down the house brick by brick was first suggested by Liverpool council more than a year ago, when a scheme to demolish Madryn Street was rubber-stamped.

Since then, museum and council bosses have been in talks with the property’s owner to buy it.

But until those negotiations are successfully concluded, they cannot confirm the idea is definitely happening.

Cllr Flo Clucas, who originally suggested the idea, said: “It would form part of Liverpool’s Beatles trail and people could see the house where Ringo lived when he was very little.

“I also think it is a brilliant way of preserving the lifestyle of people who lived in the Welsh Streets.

“But until the house is bought up, we cannot do anything.

“It remains a suggestion and is out of my hands at the moment.”

A spokesman for National Museums Liverpool said: “We are hopeful that we will be able to give a home to Ringo’s childhood house.”

He added: “Negotiations are under way with all parties involved with the house and there are still many details to be worked out, but it would make a fantastic feature in the museum and we are hugely popular with visitors.”
