THE list of awards won by Sir Paul McCartney down the years is already huge.

Last night he earned another one – for his Outstanding Contribution to Tourism.

He shared the award with his home city at the annual English tourism “Oscars” held in London.

The winning partnership was one of 16 Gold awards to celebrate excellence in English tourism.

Bill Heckle, chairman of Cavern City Tours, collecting the award on Sir Paul’s behalf, read a statement from the ex-Beatle, saying: “I’m honoured . . . particularly because of the Liverpool connection.

“It’s great to think that in some small way I’ve done something to help tourism for the place of my birth, which I’m so proud of.”

Organised by VisitBritain, the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence were held last night at the Banqueting House in London.

England Marketing Advisory Board chairman Hugh Taylor said: “Sir Paul McCartney has done great things for his home city of Liverpool, which has been completely transformed and seen visitor numbers more than double in the last five years.

“For many visitors, the emotional draw is that it is the home of The Beatles, and while Sir Paul modestly describes himself as ‘just this kid from Liverpool’, his influence on the success of Liverpool’s tourism cannot be understated.”

Keith Blundell, head of tourism at Liverpool Culture Company, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the award. When you see the list of previous recipients, it means we are now in the big league of UK destinations. To be seen in that kind of company is very significant for Liverpool.”
