Canadian musician Hal Bruce at the Cavern Club

A MUSICIAN who travelled halfway across the world to perform at the Mathew Street Festival was ordered off stage - for drawing a crowd.

Canadian singer Hal Bruce was leading Fab Four fans in a rendition of Sergeant Pepper from his Church Street podium on Monday when he was ordered to cut short his peformance.

Council officials and police claimed the globe-trotting musician was drawing too large a crowd.

Hundreds were left disappointed after Nova Scotia-based Bruce - who sings every Beatles song in a three-hour medley - reluctantly abandoned his microphone at around 3.15pm.

Today he said: "I was doing the non-stop Beatles marathon and had just got to 120 when they pulled the plug.

"I was told I didn't have the correct permit."

Bill Heckle, from the Cavern Club, who helped stage the show, said: "He was in the middle of Sergeant Pepper.

"He was very upset, but he comes to the festival every year and we'll make it up to him."

A police spokeswoman said the podium was not an officially licensed festival stage.

She added: "This performance hadn't been pre-arranged and therefore wasn't risk assessed, having no stewards.

"Following consultation with our colleagues at the council, this performance unfortunately had to be stopped."

Mr Bruce set a record in Cleveland three weeks ago for performing the entire 214-song Beatles catalogue.
