Mud is all you need to repair Paul

Bill Heckie holds the cherub

ALL you need is mud - and a famous Beatles sculpture will be complete again.

A cherub, representing ex-Beatle Paul McCartney on the famous Arthur Dooley Mathew Street tribute to the Fab Four, has been recovered 30 years after it was stolen.

The model just needs a fresh coating of clay and a lick of paint and it can take its place once again alongside John, George and Ringo in the arms of the famous Madonna statue.

But Paul's recovery is just as mysterious as his original disappearance in 1975, a year after the late Dooley's "Four Lads Who Shook the World" statue was first unveiled.

Merseyside woke to find that the baby depicting Paul had been stolen.

Bill Heckle, director of Beatles tourism company Cavern City Tours, said: "The Beatles guides joked that Paul had got his wings and flown in a reference to his then band Wings."

Fast forward 30 years and Bill got an anonymous phone call from a mystery man offering to return the missing statue.

"It was out of the blue and he asked if I was aware that the statue of Paul had gone missing many years ago.

"The caller offered his effusive apologies and said the statue had been in his garage for many years. "He said it was as a result of a ridiculous prank and, if I went to the Cavern, I would find the missing statue outside there in a plastic bag. Sure enough it was."

Now Bill is appealing for help to restore the statue, so Paul can get back to where he once belonged.

"It would not take much to restore," he added.
