We'll rebuild Ringo's house, brick by brick

Sep 16 2005

Madryn Street, one of the threatened Welsh streets where Ringo Starr once lived

THE house where Ringo Starr was born will be taken down brick by brick and preserved, it was revealed today.

Housing chiefs have come under fire for wanting to demolish the Beatles drummer's first home in Liverpool's Welsh Streets area under a £54m regeneration plan.

Liverpool council today announced it will carefully dismantle the Madryn Street terrace rather than bulldoze it along with almost 500 other properties.

The announcement was made at a meeting this morning where councillors approved the demolition of the Welsh Streets.

The decision finally brought to an end months of uncertainty over the future of the 11 roads in Toxteth.

Cllr Flo Clucas, executive member for housing, said: "There has been a lot of speculation about Ringo Starr's former home in Madryn Street. I have asked officers to ensure that the property is taken down and stored. Its future use will become clear over time."

More than 60 residents packed the town hall this morning to hear the decision on the future of their homes. Most held bright orange "de-molish" posters and there were cheers as the council agreed to raze the neighbourhood.

A few residents who wanted to save their homes sat in silence as campaigners left the room.
