PETER GRANT talks to former Fab Four promoter Sam Leach about the day the music died - 25 years ago
by Peter Grant, Liverpool Echo
I READ the news that day, oh boy. Just before dawn on December 9, 1980, my daughter woke me with the chilling news that John Lennon had been shot dead.
The death attracted as much rhetoric and column inches as JFK or Bobby K.
Two days later, I heard a radio station comment "St Nicholas Church held a memorial service for John Lennon. Only 40 people turned up for the man who once said he was bigger than Jesus Christ."
They insinuated Liverpudlians were just not bothered.
I vowed to prove them wrong. I told my wife: "I'm doing a show for John Lennon on Sunday."
