Hamburg magic

A PLAQUE commemorating the involvement of Liverpool bands in the Hamburg music scene is planned for the German city. Original groups who played at some of Hamburg's most famous clubs could also make a return visit to perform this summer. An exhibition dedicated to The Beatles and the early 1960s music scene will open at a museum in the German seaport on June 3, the weekend before the football World Cup begins. Suggestions for a plaque to commemorate the links between the Mersey Sound and Hamburg were being discussed by Liverpool councillors today. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT A second plaque could be put up at the famous Casbah Club in West Derby, owned by the family of former Beatles drummer Pete Best. Cllr Flo Clucas, the city's executive member for Europe, said: "I'm not talking about a formal twinning. "But we want to foster relationships city to city, and it should also help economic links to grow." Members of the Culture Company have been to Hamburg, and Ulf Kruger, from Hamburg's Centre of Beat, visited Liverpool earlier this year. Capital of Culture tourism chief Keith Blundell said: "Ulf is 'Mr Beatles' in Hamburg. He ' s also Astrid Kirchherr and Klaus Voorman's manager.
