IMAGINE no Beatles . . . imagine the world without them. What would Liverpool be like had the Fab Four never come together? The absence of these lads who emerged from different parts of the city but became an everlasting unit is almost unthinkable. John Lennon, James Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr went on to shake, rattle and roll the world of music, culture and attitude for generations. But for moment, switch off from reality, relax your mind and think the unthinkable - no Beatles. The idea paints a stark, surreal picture. Then open your eyes and ears and see and hear The Beatles who touched everyone; they continue to do so to this day and will do so in the future. What would have happened had these four natural musicians who could not read or write music never got their act together as a band? The Beatles producer, Sir George Martin, once said that they were 'of their time'. But what if that time had never arrived? The reality is that Liverpool would be remembered as a once thriving sea-port with beautiful architecture, a couple of ferries and the added attraction of famous football teams as well as nurturing comedians. Granted, there would have been a thriving music scene but, without The Beatles, would the then 'Merseybeat' have attracted such world-wide recognition? The Beatles' charm, irreverence, sense of humour and - above all - talent opened doors for everyone who believed in their dream to be the Toppermost of the Poppermost. If John, Paul, George and Ringo had not taken music by storm and changed the attitudes of people of all ages, creed and colour Liverpool would not be on the map - musically or otherwise - as it is to this day. Now, as the city bids for European Capital of culture in 2008, The Beatles are integral to that aim. They have been a part of all our lives through their influence and inspiration. Even those who do not particularly like their music cannot ignore their contribution as 20th and 21st century icons. |
