CILLA BLACK

by Peter Grant, icLiverpool

"I REMEMBER when they were called The Silver Beatles. It was the most exciting  time ...such special magic."

Cilla, born Pricilla Maria Veronica White on May 27, 1943, says it was in the basement of the Jacaranda Club that her memories of the band first grew.

She became the first female signing to Eppy's stable of stars.

Cilla, now one of  highest paid TV presenters, recalls: "The Beatles weren't considered the best group in the city.

"There was the Big Three and Gerry Marsden, of course.

"The Beatles went to Hamburg and spent months there and returned home in real style.
They came back in black leather jackets and pink hats which they totally copied  from Gene Vincent. And you couldn't get leather like that in Liverpool. But they had it.

"The kids went mad. I can recall one show at Blair Hall where the fans all went crazy. These days it's just sex symbols but back then it was the music and more.

"The words would get round that 'The Beatles are back  ... the Beatles are back'. It was still so exciting because they were still just our mates then.

"They used to play with King Size Taylor and the Dominoes and as I had an IN to their shows. I discovered friends I didn't know I had!"
