Cynthia Lennon

by Peter Grant, icLiverpool

THE softly-spoken first wife of John Lennon was born in Blackpool, UK. Cynthia, or 'Cyn' as she was known, was like John a war baby - September 10, 1939. John was born on October 9, 1940.

Her mum Lillian and dad Charles had re-located from Hoylake, Merseyside, to Blackpool because of the wartime bombing raids.

They returned to the family home and Cyn showed a great talent for art. In 1957 she entered Liverpool College of Art specialising in lettering.

It was there she met the rebellious John Lennon. As the Beatles fame grew she became a background figure being kept out of the papers for fear of upsetting the female fans who didn't want to see any of the Moptops as married men.

Cyn became pregnant with Julian and the couple decided to marry. The ceremony took place at Mount Pleasant Register office in Liverpool.

At one stage Cyn actually stayed at Mendips - John's childhood home. Cynthia wrote her own autobiography A Twist of Lennon and is featured in the Yoko Ono produced Imagine, the John Lennon film and video.

It was Yoko's arrival on the scene that saw the end of the marriage

She re-married and has spent most of her life living on the Isle of Man but has attended Beatle conventions.
