PETE BEST

by Peter Grant

IT WAS two years he will never forget.

Pete Best was The Beatles drummer from 1960 to 1962.He was with them in Hamburg as  he developed  his own distinctive "atom beat sound".

Pete was not born in Liverpool but in Madras, India. The Best family moved to the city in 1945.

Always a favourite at The Cavern, there were ugly scenes when it was reported in the MerseyBeat newspaper that he was axed.

Pete was replaced in the band by Ringo Starr who was, at the time, with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. A month after he was dropped The Beatles, under the managership of Brian Epstein and the musical guidance of George Martin, recorded the single Love Me Do.

Following his sacking Pete became a civil servant but did take to the road with his own band at regular intervals.

He is now at last a full-time musician again and continues to tour with his own band. Pete is a well-respected speaker at Beatle conventions and will appear at the 2001 Convention.

Fans love to hear about the early days of Hamburg which Pete recalls with amazing clarity.
Now, in the cellars of Pete's house in Hayman's Green, West Derby area, is the re-opened Casbah Club after 40 years.

He once told the ECHO, in an exclusive interview, that he never received a full explanation of why he had to leave The Beatles.

Pete, however, was featured on the Anthology 1 album, his place in their history assured. And he is still based in Liverpool where he is a popular figure.

"Once A Beatle Always a ..." is now the title of one of his own CDs.
