Help!

by Peter Grant, icLiverpool

Producer: Walter Shenson; director: Richard Lester

Stars: The Beatles; Leo Mckern; Eleanor Bron and John Bluthal.

The follow-up to the mould-breaking A Hard Day's Night had the working title Eight Arms To Hold You.

It was a full-colour extravaganza which started filming in February 1965.

It was more a Marx Brothers-styled romp but, like its predecessor, it was another box-office success.

The Beatles travelled to Austria and The Bahamas for on location shots mixing business with pleasure, but they had their work cut out.

Visually it used all the tricks of the trade and the music was, as always, faultless.

The screenplay was from Charles Wood, who had worked on Dick Lester's previous film The Knack. And although it lacked the earthy Scouse of A.Hard Day's Night, it showed that being a Beatle could be fun - though very hectic.

Help! featured the following songs: the title track; I Need You; Another Girl; Ticket To Ride; The Night Before; You've Got To Hide Your Love Away and You're Going To Lose That Girl.

The Beatles had a three picture deal with United Artists. Sadly it was the last of their character-led feature films.
