Yellow Submarine

by Peter Grant, icLiverpool

Stars (voice-overs): Lance Percival, Dick Emery and Geoffrey Hughes. Script consultant: Roger McGough.

The Beatles' third film was an ambitious animation production that proved to be another crtical success.

It had the sub-title Nothing is Real and was inspired by the Sgt Pepper album.

The songs in the film also included some new tracks: All Together Now, Hey Bulldog, It's All Too Much and It's Only A Northern Song.

Other Beatle classics featured in the film include Eleanor Rigby; A Day In the Life; When I'm Sixty Four; Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds; Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band; Nowhere Man, and All You Need Is Love.

George Martin, musical director of the film, took up one half of the official soundtrack album with his beautifully arranged score.

Liverpool poet Roger McGough was brought in to add some Scouse witticisms to the proceedings.

The Beatles themselves appeared in mischievous mood at the end of the film.

In 2000 the film was re-released and re-premiered in the town where they were born.

The US/Anglo team behind the original production arrived in Liverpool to celebrate the re-issued, re-mastered print and new soundtrack album.

One critic at the Philharmonic Premiere remarked that hearing Paul's Eleanor Rigby and John's Nowhere Man in the superb acoustic surroundings caused the proverbial hairs to rise on the back of his head.

The actors who provided the voice-overs came to Liverpool for a reception at the Town Hall including Liverpudlian Geoffrey Hughes, who played Paul, and Londoner John Clive who gave a very nasal John.

It was a worldwide success.

A special stamp in the USA was produced and both The Philharmonic Hall and Liverpool Town Halls had receptions for the world's press.

Not a bad tribute for a song that Paul had written so children could singalong to it.

There is now a permanent yellow submarine statue in Liverpool, to mark this simple but magical McCartney creation and the album was reissued with more songs from the film added.
