Airline targets flying doctors

Jan 26 2007

By Neil Hodgson, Liverpool Echo

MERSEYSIDE'S flying doctors are being invited to enjoy the high life with airline giant Lufthansa.

They are targeting docs with an offer of free air miles to improve medical cover on their flights.

Doctors registering for the German carrier's Miles and More programme will get a 5,000-mile bonus on their first flight.

Lufthansa's worldwide routes from Manchester are regularly flown by Merseyside business and holiday travellers heading for Europe, Asia and America.

The airline said it wants to persuade health professionals to travel with them to improve the care available to fellow passengers in the event of a medical emergency during a flight.

Doctors registered on the scheme will be asked to provide details of their medical expertise.

After the airline's medical service has checked their registration, participating doctors will receive their one-off welcome miles reward.

Participants can also take part in Lufthansa's own medical events and conventions, receive useful information about the Lufthansa fleet's first aid equipment and take part in first aid courses in small groups.

Dieter Grotepass, Lufthansa's UK and Ireland general manager, said: "We want to work with the medical profession to provide quick and effective assistance for any passenger who requires medical assistance on board a Lufthansa aircraft."

He added: "When a doctor who has registered uses their Miles and More number to book a flight, information on the doctor's medical expertise will appear on the passenger list.

"So, in a medical emergency, the purser will be able to approach the doctor discreetly to ask for help.

"This will remove the need for any 'is there a doctor on board?' announcement along with the possible unrest which it can cause."
