GERMAN airline Lufthansa is hoping to score with football fans by showing live action from this summer's World Cup on its planes.
Dieter Grotepass, UK & Ireland general manager, revealed that the airline is in talks with football's governing body Fifa over rights to screen the kick-by-kick action to passengers.
The airline is celebrating 50 years of flights from its northern England base of Manchester Airport, where overall passenger volume on its Düsseldorf and Hamburg routes rose 35% this month.
He said two of the most popular connecting routes for business and leisure passengers from the region, including Merseyside, are emerging economic superpowers China and India.
The first Lufthansa flight from the region was a Lockheed L-1049G Super Constellation on April 23, 1956 to Chicago.
Lufthansa cabin attendant Anna Schwertfeger donned a 1950s uniform to mark the anniversary and is pictured with flight captain Gerrit Adam, Dr Karsten Benz (Lufthansa's vice-president, sales and services Europe) and Dieter Grotepass.
