With the help of tunnel engineer Nick Walton (a slightly manic Carl Chase) they decide to brick up the tunnels to keep out the people of Wirral who criticise the city while working there.
Kirkby brings in lots of local references and names (Herbert the hairdresser, radio presenter Pete Price and Fred the weatherman are among those in the firing line).
But it is the musical element which tips the scales in the show’s favour, parodies which are beautifully sung.
Former Liverpool Everyman director Bob Eaton directs with style, there is a great design from Billy Meall and Howard Gray is the musical director.
