2008 will be your date with destiny

Nov 7 2006

By Warren Bradley, Leader Of Liverpool City Council

Cllr Warren Bradley

LIVERPOOL, European Capital of Culture 2008.

Since June 4, 2003, it has been our date with destiny.

Today the guessing of what fate has in store for 2008 ends.

A day after the city's sky was lit up by fireworks, Liverpool lifts the lid on some of the highlights being planned to light up a nation.

Today the future of Liverpool is here.

And our future is bright. Very bright.

Never has a "culture capital" announced its highlights as early as Liverpool - and few will ever match the scale and ambition of our vision.

Seventy major events are already in the calendar - many of them free - and we are only at the beginning. There's more, much more to come.

The announcement today is a result of great teamwork between Liverpool City Council, the Liverpool Culture Company, and our cultural partners, with the support of our business community and funders across the UK and Europe.

They have worked tirelessly with thousands of people to provide you with a snapshot of the awesome potential of 2008 to be everything we all want it to be.
