One of the city's best-loved writers Frank Cottrell Boyce, has been commissioned to write a new show for young people. "We are committed to nurturing family and young people's theatre," says Gemma. "The new play will be about a teenager in Liverpool, but not heavily issue-based.

Its going to be fun!" Meanwhile, the Unity, the city's leading fringe venue, is organising a two week Splatterfest children's festival, based on previously successful events which staged shows for babies and upwards. "This will be the biggest festival ever," says the Unity's Mike James.

The theatre is also in discussion about projects including its patrons, including David Morrissey, Bill Kenwright, director Josette Bishell-Mingo and Ian Hart.

The Blackie arts centre, due to reopen next year, it also planning to stage some spectacular events with its new balconied theatre.

Also set to open in 2008 is the city council's Neptune Theatre, closed for some time, but now with improvements "on schedule."

The Liverpool Empire is planning some major musicals, and there will be a whole programme of street theatre bringing the city alive with performance.
