Born and raised in Liverpool, he is organist for the Liverpool Philharmonic, St George's Hall and the Anglican Cathedral, where he is also Head of Music.

Composer Hugh Wood, a former music lecturer at the university, also received a doctorate in music.

Earlier in the day, the eldest son of Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi graduated with a doctorate.

Mohammad Muammar Al Gaddafi, 34, studied part-time for his PhD in project risk management at the university's school of architecture and building engineering.

He attended the graduation ceremony yesterdaybut his father was not present.

The married father-of-two, who runs Libya's telecommunications firm, posed for photographs afterwards in his mortar board and gown but declined to be interviewed.

His spokesman, Dr Gamyel Jumeil, said he planned to help rebuild Libya's infrastructure.

He said: "His research was into risk management, specifically predicting possible delays in the construction of infrastructure, and developing plans to deal with the delays.

"He chose the University of Liverpool because it has a good reputation and it has experience in similar projects in the Middle East and the Mediterranean."

Dr Gaddafi, a keen Liverpool FC fan, made regular visits to the UK to carry out his research, staying in Liverpool for up to five weeks at a time.
