ARTISTS interested in decorating Liverpool’s flock of Superlambananas are being invited to a special reception.
The event will take place at the Static gallery in Roscoe Street where the Go Superlambananas project will be showcased.
Wild In Art hopes to place up to 100 decorated copies of the sculpture around the city this summer.
It hopes it will be an unmissable opportunity for the region’s artists to have their work viewed and enjoyed by millions of people.
Director Sally-Ann Wilkinson said: “It’s a mass participation art event bringing together artists and communities and many of the cultural organisations in Liverpool.”
During the reception on February 5 a new commission by painter Laurence Payot will be created live.
He will pour paint over two sculptures to create a rainbow-coloured Superlambanana installation to be displayed in the window of Utility on Bold Street.
Alex Corina will also unveil his Rocking Superlambanana.
Phil Redmond, creative director of the Liverpool Culture Company, will welcome artists interested in submitting designs.
He said: ''One of our hopes for 2008 is that we give the opportunity and platforms for people to showcase their creativity.
“I can't think of a better way to do that than by using what’s now a modern-day icon as part of an art invasion of our streets.''
Meanwhile, youngsters at the Community Justice Centre in north Liverpool have also become involved in the project.
The centre is sponsoring a Superlambanana and after a visit by Sally-Ann Wilkinson, young people were enthused to go away and write a song about the project.
Youngsters will also be involved in how the model is decorated.
Artists wanting to attend the reception should email info@wildinart.
