We're backing Robyn

Feb 1 2006

Robyn Archer, pictured soon after her arrival in Liverpool as Capital of Culture artistic director, has now left the position

LIVERPOOL'S leading arts groups have given their full backing to the work of the Culture Company in planning 2008.

In a joint statement, the Liverpool Philharmonic, as well as the city's theatres and galleries endorse the work of artistic director Robyn Archer.

Australian Ms Archer has been at the centre of stories about obtaining a UK work visa.

The arts bosses expressed concern at a widely held public perception that "nothing was happening" in the run-up to Capital of Culture.

They insisted there was plenty of work going on behind the scenes.

The Everyman and Playhouse theatres, the Liverpool Biennial, the Tate Gallery, the Fact cinema and technology centre

and the Bluecoat Arts Centre added support in a meeting convened by Philharmonic chief executive Michael Elliott.

Mr Elliott said: "We do not perceive a problem.

"It is a complex programme which Robyn is putting together and these things take time."
