ON Aigburth's Lark Lane, a popular hang out for those wanting to avoid the crowds of the city centre, there's a lot of choice for the hungry.
If you want Chinese, Indian, Italian or Mexican food, it's all catered for.
But when it comes to making your tenner go further, the New Regent restaurant serving Chinese, Cantonese and English food claims to be the best value for money.
A yellow sandwich board outside advertises an early-bird menu - a three--course meal for £9 a head - from 5.30pm to 9pm on Sunday to Wednesday.
From 2-4pm on Sunday and Thursday they offer an allyou-can-eat buffet for £8 a head and both promotions have a special price of £4.50 for children.
Normally these restaurants are best avoided unless you're either very hungry or very drunk because the 'buffet' means crusty school-dinner style trays filled with an indistinguishable meat that has been sitting in a greasy sauce under a hot light for about three days.
But the New Regent isn't a canteen-style restaurant.
Inside the 160-seat restaurant it's light and colourful with nicely decorated tables and friendly staff.
Most of the New Regent's custom doesn't come from the eat-all-you-can-becausethere's-no-tomorrow clientele, but groups of friends out for a meal and a few drinks.
When we arrived we were immediately asked what we wanted to drink and were brought a mountain of prawn crackers to gnaw on while we looked through the extensivemenu.
