Come to main course and things were equally challenging. Nothing on the menu was run of the mill.
Try herb crust pork loin, or lavender honey glazed duck breast. Then there's wild mushroom and Madeira sirloin steak. Or tornado Rossini. The choice is both excellent and bewildering - and it's even possible to have steak and chips with an added sauce of your choice.
Mark, being a bit of a steak person, went for the somewhat exotic chocolate chilli fillet steak (£14.95), which was served with mashed sweet potato and vegetables. Most of our friends went "yuk" when we told them of his choice but rest assured: there have been recipes for rabbit, beef, goose and pork with chocolate sauce in many "foody" magazines and supplements.
It's apparently Mexican and is far from sweet, somewhat bitter and certainly complementary to the meat.
He thought the sauce was excellent and something of a challenging difference to what is normally on offer.
I went for the warm monkfish and scallop salad (£13.95). The serving of fish was generous, excellently and obviously gently cooked. There was a plentiful helping of salad.
Vegetarians and vegans are well looked after and there's a goodly selection of side dishes if need be.
The dessert menu is a little less adventurous - waffles, cheesecake, meringues, ice creams and sorbets. I am afraid I did succumb to a gooseberry creme brulee (£3.95) - beautifully light with the acidity of the berries tempered by the lush cream. Mark's triple chocolate cheesecake (£3.95) - dark, light and white - looked like sin on a plate.
"Any why not?" he ventured.. Why not, indeed!
