An a la carte menu with starters, side orders, main dishes, pizza and pasta accompanied a set menu with two courses for £12.95 or three for £14.95.
The differences in our hitherto "togetherness" began to show as I opted for the set menu and my husband the a la carte.
Soup of the Day was an earthy mushroom soup which came with toasted bread rolls. The soup was warm, creamy and just the thing for a cold winter's night.
My husband's starter was equally impressive. He opted for crispy baby squid in filo pastry-wrapped tiger prawns.
The batter on the squid was light as was the filo pastry which prevented this light dish becoming too filling. From the set menu I had chosen cod as my main dish, and I am so glad.
The handsome portion of thick white fish had been fried and came with a tasty herb crust.
The fish had been expertly balanced atop a mound of roasted potatoes which were crispy on the outside and light and floury on the inside.
This tower was topped with balsamic spinach which gave a bite to the usually creamy smooth and bland spinach. Seasonal vegetables of carrots, courgettes and cauliflower completed the meal and they were sweet, crisp, and slightly firm as vegetables should be, none of the overcooked mush.
Although I don't eat meat, my husband assured me his duck which he ordered (and which came) pink was perfect. I have to confess here I couldn't make room for a pud but my husband could and in the spirit of sharing at least I offered him my liqueur cocoa sponge.
He claimed it was "smooth, light and indulgent", with scraping room only left on the dish. The meal was rounded off with two coffees. And I have not forgotten about the wine.
