The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy begins with a perfectly ordinary English human being Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) having a very bad day.
The local council have decided to demolish his home to make way for a new bypass and he finds himself in a stand-off with a large bulldozer.
Suddenly, one of Arthur's oldest friends - Ford Prefect (Mos Def) - turns up, takes Arthur to the pub, and tells him that he's not from Guilford after all, but from a small planet in the vicinity of Betelgeuse (?!)
He has come to save Arthur as the Earth is about to be demolished by a Vogon Constructor Fleet. The Vogons, a malevolently cruel race of alien bureaucrats are about to destroy the planet to make way for a new Hyperspace Expressway.
Can things get any worse? Well yes, actually they can.
Arthur and Ford face dire perils like Vogon poetry, dying in the vacuum of space, the strange logic of the Infinite Improbability Drive, happy doors, the Ravenous Bugblatter beast of Trall, towels, the universe's most intelligent and most depressed robot life-form, the quest for true love, surviving drinking a Pan Galactic Gargle blaster, and the answer to the ultimate question: what is the meaning of life, the universe and everything?
