Big Brother's Bez goes for the Domino effect

Apr 15 2005

By Kate Mansey, Liverpool Echo

Bez from The Happy Mondays with Monica Ward

NO, I don't know about that. You know he isn't an early riser," says Bez's PA when I suggest scheduling an interview for 1.30pm.

Of course. This is Bez the party animal who managed to blag the respect of the nation when they crowned him King of Celebrity Big Brother 2004.

"I didn't think I would be so popular," he says. "I found it quite funny - ha ha ha. Quite - what is it?? Humbling.

"I was a bit of a lastminute.com sort of addition really - ha ha ha."

His laugh is infectious and when he finally gets out of bed, he's smarter than he comes across on screen.

Arguably it was Bez -real name Mark Berry -and The Happy Mondays boys who created the whole Madchester scene.

His first foray into music was being invited on stage to 'dance' with his mate Shaun Ryder's band The Happy Mondays and then with Black Grape.

And the maraca-shaking phenomenon never looked back.

When boy bands and Blue Peter presenters are found dabbling in drugs it generally tends to be what teachers describe as 'the start of a slippery slope'.

But in the 80s it launched Bez, Shaun and co into oblivion - literally.
