Their insistence on touring means they have been on the road for months, but Jim makes time to see his children.
And while he's single at the moment he says he still has agood relationship with ex-wives Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders and Patsy Kensit.
With Chrissie he had daughter Yasmin Paris and with Patsy, son James.
Jim has a very natural, likeable style of chatting away as if you're an old friend rather than a total stranger.
He says: "I actually saw Patsy last night. We all get on for the children's sakes and for all our own sakes as well. "When you get married you hope and dream for the best and when it ends, it ends."
Now the band is set to return to Liverpool for their Summer Pops date on July 10.
Jim says with atone of gravity in his voice: "Now I'm telling you the truth here - we've had some of our best gigs at the Summer Pops in Liverpool.
"The first one was so good we were wary of playing there again but they've both been really amazing gigs that stand out and you have to say that's down to the Liverpool crowd.
"They've been immensely enjoyable and that's saying something when you play 150 gigs ayear. "I'm serious. I'd rather play Liverpool than Aberdeen - but don't tell them that."
