He was also able to point out the guillotine behind us where we observed a beheading. By the time we reached the end of the show, the darkness had descended so much that it was difficult to make out some characters.
But all was finally enlivened by a shoot-out and a rocket launch marking the Pimpernel's latest success.
While the production had plenty of humour, including our guide and director Tim Beasley shepherding us from place to place and some songs and dances with a modern touch, this Scarlet Pimpernel did not forget the drama of the piece.
