Miss Jones said: "I can't think of any question where we've really got stuck. I think we were very lucky in the first round because Hull just didn't buzz in very much.

"The most embarrassing moment was when there was a question and we thought the answer was 'testes'. "I couldn't bring myself to say the word on national television, so I had to nominate Steve to do it.

"He said 'testicles', and it was the wrong answer!"

But it was not the questions that were the most daunting aspect of the show for the Liverpool team - rather the host, Jeremy Paxman, who replaced Bamber Gascoigne as host when the show was revived after a seven-year break in 1994.

Ms Jones, who originally hails from Evesham, in Worcestershire, not far from Paxman's childhood home, said: "On Newsnight he looks very stern, but in real life he was even sterner."

She added: "I don't know how he does it really, when we were filming one of the shows it was two days after the London bombings, and he'd been there interviewing people in the aftermath.

"He didn't seem too interested in us, and I'm not surprised."

Liverpool will slug it out for a place in the grand final, against Trinity Hall Cambridge at 8.30pm on BBC2 tonight.
