The Beatles - 'bombastic, bubblegum claptrap'

THEIR music provided the soundtrack to a generation and brought pleasure to millions around the world.

But for one Liverpool-born writer and musician, the Beatles are nothing more than "bombastic, bubblegum claptrap."

Gary Hall has now committed his controversial views to paper in a 144-page book for all those who share his opinion - and for those who don't - called Living Life Without Loving The Beatles: A Survivor's Guide.

And he is under no illusion how his extended diatribe will go down in his native city.

Most bookshops have refused to stock it and he has declined to have his photograph taken for fear of being attacked by outraged Beatles fans.

Mr Hall, 39, describes his book as a "self-help guide for an oppressed minority" who fail to take any delight in the music of the Fab Four.

So far, around 1,000 copies of the book have been sold, which Mr Hall had to publish himself after no major publisher would touch it.

He said: "It keeps growing and I'm delighted to have got so many people all over the world talking about it.

"Most of my friends are intelligent Beatles fans and I've had letters from people in Liverpool who don't like the Beatles.

"I was making music in the 80s and 90s, until I mentioned to a journalist once that I didn't like the Beatles. That was it - career over. I've no doubt they're probably the most important band in the history of the world, but that doesn't mean that they're good.

"To compare them to the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Gogh or Mozart is ludicrous. They're a pop band, in the same way that Westlife are a pop band."

LIVING Life Without Loving The Beatles can be ordered from www.freespeechbooks.com at £6.99.
